This commission was inspired by a sketch that I did for my parents of our family’s cabin. Having had a lot of fun with the project, I put out some feelers to see if anyone else I knew wanted a custom sketch of their cabin. This is the result of one of those inquiries!
To complete this custom cabin sketch, I started with a reference image sent by the client, to which we made a few edits to achieve the desired final composition. In this case, the client wanted a few trees removed in both the foreground and the background, as well as the telephone line running through the image.
The sketch was done digitally, using Procreate. A digital format allows for changes to be made during the process, which can be useful for designs as detailed as this, especially when there are edits that the client would like. I would love to do some more of these custom cabin/home sketches! Send me a message if you would like one, or something similar!
This project was completed for the Gallery Players of Niagara, who commissioned me to create a series of six stickers for an activation they were running called “The Bach Walk”. The Bach Walk was a series of musical performances wherein a selection of musicians performed Bach’s complete Cello Suites in 6 different venues around downtown St. Catharines, Ontario.
My task for this commission was to visually transform the opening bar of each suite into a round sticker that guests would be able to collect at each location. My process involved listening to the suites, deciphering the tone of each, and deciding on visual movement for the bar that encapsulated the sound of each suite. Working with a professional cello player, I was able to ensure that all of the musical notations were accurate and that the bars were still recognizable.
This was a fun and challenging project unlike any others I have done, and I learned a lot about musical theory and the importance of public musical events. As someone solely focused on visual art, it was wonderful to learn about another art form less familiar to me.
This commission was for a client who wanted a logo for an annual event that they hold with some family friends in Halkett Bay. The client wanted something that represented both their property and the essence of Halkett Bay, but simple enough that the design could be placed on a baseball cap. From the reference and inspiration photos they sent me, their yurt stood out as a unique and personal symbol. I added some fir trees and a sun in the background to give the design a warm, west-coast feel, while still keeping the design fairly simple. The client ended up getting the design embroidered onto baseball caps for the event attendees, so the design had to be altered a bit, but it turned out really well!
I'm the artist and maker behind Mabel & Magic. I make greeting cards, art prints, and other handmade goods with my original hand-drawn designs, primarily inspired by the natural world!
While I am currently living in Toronto, I spent the majority of my life in Vancouver, BC. I have always been inspired by the outdoors, having spent so much time in and around it. My love for the flora and fauna of where I grew up is the primary inspiration for my designs. After moving to downtown Toronto, focusing on nature-themed illustrations has helped me stay connected to both the natural world and to the West Coast!
I hand-draw all my designs on paper with Micron Sakura Pigma ink pens, scan them, and print them directly onto my paper products with my Canon Pixma printer (aside from my stickers, which are outsourced and printed by the lovely folks at StickerApp)! For my fabric products (T-shirts and Tote Bags), I am currently in the process of figuring out the best option for printing. Hang tight!
In terms of selecting what to draw, I select plants and animals based on two categories. 1: Do they have a recognizable shape or primary pattern that would lend itself well to my personal style? And 2: Do I want to draw it? That's it ☺
Mabel and Magic are the names I gave to two of my most cherished stuffed animals (cats, of course) that I've had since I was two years old.
To me, naming my business after nostalgic symbols of my childhood reminds me why I decided to start this business in the first place. I've loved doing art for as long as I can remember, but never believed I could build any sort of career out of it. I've recently realized that there will never be a better time to try to get my art out there than now, and my younger self would be very excited that I've decided to pursue my artistic endeavours. The name Mabel & Magic reminds me of how far I've come in terms of embracing my childhood passions in my adult life -- my passion for creating has stuck with me all these years, just like Mabel and Magic have.
Every illustration is designed and hand-drawn by me, at home - each piece is one-of-a-kind.
I use 110lb/300 GSM cardstock paper that is thick and matte, so all ink (mine and yours) does not bleed.
Everything is made locally in my home studio in Toronto, unless I need to outsource (stickers, shirts), in which case all partner companies are Canadian-owned. 🇨🇦
